I’m at work
…and they have me wearing khaki’s and a blazer. Where did I go wrong?
God and Chance
My friend Andres had this to say in response to someone on his blog:
“Even if the universe isn’t designed then the theist at least is asking an interesting question, ‘Why the hell does it at least seem so designed?’, at the very least, what the theist points out is that something awfully weird seems to be going on. Either the universe is playing a rather cruel trick on me, or my intuition and senses tell me that there’s something genuinely non-‘random’ about this.”
I love when my friends can provide such excellent quotes.
On Smells
At some point this year, my wife and I tried a new fragrant soap from Bath & Body Works: Sea Island Cotton. I have just one word to describe the heavenly bliss in which my olfactory senses revel with each inhalation: Wow!
Over the years I’ve come to appreciate certain smells, especially those that bring back vivid memories and feelings associated with those smells. As a kid, I would love to play in the open field between my Grandparents’ home and my Aunt & Uncle’s in rural Ohio. The smell of the pigs, the dried mud flaking of their pink bodies; the chicken coup; the hay stacked high in the barn, its dust creating a sort of haze in the light shining in; the freshly cut grass, different from what we have here in south Florida, thinner and softer. But the most vivid of the smells is of my Grandparents’ home itself.
There have been two instances where these scents from Ohio have overtaken me completely:
1) I was working at PBCC one night, having to drive the 5-wheeler across an open field between two of our buildings, when the scent of the freshly cut grass in the field combined with the cane fields only several hundred feet away captivated me so that I continued riding in that field for another ten minutes, just so I could take in those smells for a little while longer.
2) In another instance at PBCC, I was checking all of the classrooms after hours, cleaning and locking up, when I entered this one classroom and the smell of Grandma and Grandpa’s house overwhelmed me. Just as I had done before, I sat down in the classroom and took in the aroma for at least ten minutes.
Similarly, the smell of Sea Island Cotton has now become my favorite smell, as it explicitly reminds me of Shannon and our stay in Las Vegas for our honeymoon. Our room at The Venetian smelled just like it. And even now, that smell always puts a smile on my face and makes me feel utterly complete.
From NPR’s All Things Considered, this segment talks about a recent poll done by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, where studies foud that 73% of doctors polled were in favor of some kind of public health care option. The subsequent segment of the All Things Considered took a short look at the poll.

A Question for the Ladies:
So:
You’re at my place.
We’re getting pretty comfortable, and things are going very well.
Conversation is engaging without awkward silence.
Good eye contact.
We both smell great.
You’ve kicked your shoes off.
We’re totally comfortable.
We decide to put a little music on, or maybe a movie.
That’s when I pull out my Kymera Magic Wand Universal Remote, and with infinite grace command my entertainment system like I’m the Dark Lord of Love.
Here’s the question:
Do you put your shoes back on before running out my door, pick them up and run out with them in your hand, or run out and consider the shoes a loss?
Were it me, my wife would totally grab the shoes and run with them in her hand. I would then receive divorce papers soon after. So maybe this ought to remain a dream unrealized.
I love it when…
…my iPhone crashes while upgrading to OS 3.1. And I lose everything. And the backup wasn’t really a backup. And my A/C goes out in my home. On my day off. Yeah. Thanks, world. You suck.
I haven’t felt this kind of joy from discovering a new band in quite some time.
